Abbie Self is Ofsted’s Head of Data and Insight for Schools, Regions and Quantitative Research. Abbie has over 17 years’ experience within Government in analytical roles and using data to enable effective decision making. Abbie moved to Ofsted from the Office for National Statistics in June 2018 where she filled a number of senior leadership roles including acting Deputy Director for Health Analysis and acting Deputy Director for Well-being, Inequality, Sustainability and Environment. Abbie was also instrumental in establishing and delivering the government’s Measuring National Well-being programme. Over the last year, Abbie has overseen the redevelopment of the Inspection Data Summary Report in support of Ofsted’s new Education Inspection Framework and has initiated a new quantitative research function to generate new knowledge through greater collaboration and data linkage. Abbie is excited to be leading innovative work to help achieve Ofsted’s vision as a Force for Improvement.

  • Producing Insights – how we seek to draw meaning from the data mass
  • Improving understanding of how data is used by Ofsted and how this has changed under the new Education Inspection Framework
  • Avoiding the collection and over interpretation of data which introduces unnecessary burden on leaders and teachers
  • Discussing the new School Inspection Handbook guidance and the role of data in supporting the next steps for pupils
